w/ special guest RIO EN MEDIO (USA)

Mistletone is proud to present for the first time in Australia, the slow and hazy psychedelic jams of New Mexico’s Brightblack Morning Light. Their dreamy, blissed out desert tones will be the perfect accompaniment to a hot summer.

The band was founded by the gentle naturalist ND Shineywater, hailing from Alabama, birthplace of icons such as Sun Ra & Diana Ross.  Shineywater since has moved to live a minimal life off the coal/nuclear grid in New Mexico, by using only four solar panels in his small adobe dwelling. For this tour Brightblack Morning Light will consist of Shineywater with two accompanists: Danielle Stech-Homsy (keyboards/vocals) who has released two fine solo albums under the name Rio en Medio, and Cannupa Luger, a Native American artist and percussionist who lives in the mountains nearby Shineywater’s home.

Brightblack Morning Light released two LPs on Matador Records: the languid, self titled Brightblack Morning Light (2005), followed by the soul-blues-gospel tinged Motion To Rejoin (2008). Shineywater previously released an album under the name Brightblack titled Ala.cali.tucky, produced by Paul Oldham and featuring his brother Will (Bonnie Prince Billy), in 2004, and a 2002 split 7″ with Bonnie Prince Billy under the name Rainywood.

Recordings don’t come as often as live shows for Shineywater & Brightblack Morning Light. The live shows however, have been historically marked with performances with Os Mutantes, Vashti Bunyan and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott as well as small, rurally curated “Quiet Quiet” festivals with Joanna Newson, Lavender Diamond & Michael Hurley. BBML curated San Francisco’s Noise Pop at Great American Music Hall and have performed at many festivals in Europe and the UK including All Tomorrows Parties curated by Slint. In 2009, BBML were invited to All Tomorrows Parties curated by My Bloody Valentine, and toured with My Bloody Valentine around America as well as opening for Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions in San Francisco.

Special guests will be Rio en Medio, bewitching new-folk from New Mexican native Danielle Stech-Homsy. Rio en Medio’s beautiful songs skillfully balance organic and electronic sounds and showcase Danielle’s delicate vocal harmonies. Rio en Medio  has toured worldwide with many notable bands —Grizzly Bear, Cocorosie,Patrick Wolf and Devendra Banhart, to name a few and this will be her first time in Australia.
